Investing in Creativity: Why schools should prioritise Performing Arts funding (and how we can help)

Teachers, educators and researchers alike have seen that students who actively participate in The Arts consistently outperform their peers with limited arts exposure across nearly all areas of achievement (source). Despite these clear benefits, developing sustainable arts programs isn’t always prioritised in schools.

Raw Energy Dance Education and ASPA Education have played a key role in providing support for the delivery of dance and performing arts programs in collaboration with schools across Australia, knowing that investing in programs of this nature is essential for student development.

So with planning season in full swing, and Principals, Heads of Department, and Classroom Teachers in search of programs that energise students while supporting their personal growth, we’re zooming in on the assistance we can provide you and your school through tried and tested performing arts programs.

Performing Arts: Academically Backed Learning

With current academic proficiency standards not being met by at least 1 in 3 students nationally according to 2024 NAPLAN results, we understand that The Arts might not be at the top of your school’s priority list. However we also know that important life skills like communication, problem solving and expression of emotion and ideas are also on the decline. Thankfully these skills can be honed through specialised arts programs, increasing students’ capacity to succeed in other subjects.

Performing Arts activities like singing, dancing and drama can aid in language development, communication, and pattern recognition – essential skills which we know are foundational in maths and literacy. Embedding these skills in creative ways, such as listening for rhyming and repetition in a song, or communicating through situational drama activities, can reduce the cognitive load that is required to recognise and complete similar tasks in other subjects, such as recognising numerical patterns or understanding the narrative structure of a story.

Artistic subjects also serve as a powerful tool to support emergent literacy and enhance language development in younger students, for example through clarity and diction rehearsed when singing. Activities like dance are an avenue for kinaesthetic exploration, promote body awareness, and offer opportunities for social engagement. Similarly, drama encourages imagination and structured storytelling, helping individuals understand and navigate sociocultural contexts. Academic research has consistently shown that it makes comprehension and retention of information more accessible to a wider range of ages and abilities, and it makes learning more enjoyable!

Addressing Curriculum Needs, Always.

The Arts is still an essential part of the curriculum, and is one of the best ways to ensure that students are able to engage and achieve the General Capabilities outlined in the Australian Curriculum. At REDed, this is at the front of our minds when delivering programs in a school context.

Through script reading, keeping the beat or rhythm, and counting out dance steps, students enhance Literacy and Numeracy skills. They also foster Critical and Creative Thinking by interpreting movement or scenarios, innovating creative additions to a performance, and problem-solving when they rise to a challenge. An inherently group-based activity, we encourage students to develop socially, emotionally, and academically through The Arts, and build Personal and Social Capability through collaboration, empathy, and self-expression. Through many of our programs, students engage in reflection and rehearsal of performance outcomes, plus through feedback and by exploring different perspectives, they improve Ethical Understanding. Inherently, through shared movement and storytelling, students are also led to develop greater Intercultural Understanding with their peers and wider community.

As well as General Capabilities, our programs are designed to align with the specific curriculum areas of music, dance, and drama, and can be customised to focus on specific skill sets – whether it’s pitch and dynamics, space and relationships, or character and improvisation. Each session we run is carefully crafted to build on what’s already happening in the classroom, offering specialist artistic input that eases the load for teachers, leading students to make connections with what they’ve learnt through the performing arts, and how this applies to their other subjects.

Engaging with The Arts allows individuals to perceive and make sense of the world through their senses, making learning through sight, sound, and movement both meaningful and effective. Get in touch with us today and build The Arts into your 2026 budget in a beneficial way.
